Eligibility Requirements – Initial Certification
Requirements for initial certification are addressed in the OECP Crane Operator Candidate Manual. They include the following:
Must be a member in good standing with the International Union of Operating Engineers with dues paid through the current month.
Attest to compliance with the physical qualification standards for U.S. Department of Transportation Medical Card or Certificate, or a state issued Department of Motor Vehicles Medical Card or Certificate or ASME B.30-5-3.1.2.1 (2021).
Must have a minimum of 500 hours of experience or training in performing the work of the Operating Engineers within the past five (5) years.
Must submit a certificate of completion from a Signal Person Rigging training course delivered by an IUOE-recognized Training Program, Apprenticeship, Skill Improvement, Skill Advancement, or Training Center. The training must align with OSHA requirements to demonstrate foundational knowledge and skills.
Pass written examination and practical examinations.
